Maintenance of ditches, streams, and storm drains is extremely important to help prevent storm water runoff from infiltrating our sanitary sewers. Although the District was established in 1967 to provide sanitary and stormwater service, the Town of Merrillville provides stormwater and drainage service to residents. The Merrillville Stormwater District provides these services to residents, should you have a drainage problem, see a storm drain backed up, anything stormwater or drainage related, they will be happy to help you. Their contact information is here:

Merrillville, because of it's development over the years, has two sanitary sewer districts, the other being Merrillville Conservancy District (MCD). IHCD serves most of the southwest corner of Merrillville, with MCD serving the rest of Merrilvile and some areas in Hobart. Their website is here:
Indiana Code IC 14-33 developed the framework for establishing a Conservancy District. Conservancy Districts in Indiana can take many forms, a great FAQ link provided by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources can be viewed here:

The District reports to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), which inspects our facilities regularly, and the State Board of Accounts, who audit the District's financial records.
